How to evaluate any AI tool before you pay

New AI tools launch every week. Most are vaporware — a slick landing page wrapping someone else's API with a $29/month price tag. Here's how to verify any tool is real, active, and actually worth your money.

Green flag — Active product

The tool has been updated in the last 90 days, has a public changelog or Twitter/X account with recent posts, and their status page shows uptime above 99%. If you can't find any of these, treat it as dead.

Green flag — Real free tier

A genuine free tier lets you complete at least one full task without entering a credit card. "14-day free trial" is different from a permanent free plan — read the fine print. If they ask for payment info upfront, factor that into your trust score.

Yellow flag — Thin team

Solo founders building AI wrappers can build great tools, but they're also the ones who disappear without notice. Check if the team is named anywhere, if there's a LinkedIn, and if the product has been around for more than 6 months.

Red flag — Wrapper risk

If a tool's pricing is "unlimited" at $9/month while using GPT-4 or Claude API, do the math — they're either losing money or throttling you. Unlimited AI at $9/month is not sustainable. Look for tools with their own trained models or clear, usage-based pricing.

Questions to ask before subscribing

Can I export my data? If you put 6 months of work into a tool, you need to be able to get it out if they shut down or raise prices.
What happens to my data? Is it used to train their model? Shared with third parties? For professional or sensitive work, this matters.
Is there a cheaper alternative? 80% of what most paid AI tools do, Claude or ChatGPT free tiers already do. Make sure you actually need the specialisation before paying extra.
How long has it been live? A tool that's been running for 18+ months has survived at least one AI hype cycle. That's a basic signal that it has real users who find it genuinely useful.
